One of the most cheerful places to shop downtown is The Soapery on the west end of Broughton Street. And if the bright colors and cheerful windows don’t catch your attention, the heavenly fragrance wafting out the shop’s open doors will!
This gorgeous storefront is a Technicolor dream, with flowers literally cascading down the windows and clouds of bubbles drifting down Broughton, beckoning shoppers down the sidewalk. Inside the shop is just as cheerful, with giant flowers and tables covered in a rainbow of soaps, bath bombs, shower steamers, shampoo bars, lotions and more. Owners Tracy and James Gunn make the products in-house in small batches and according to formulas Tracy created using vegan ingredients. Most products are also packaging-free in an effort to reduce single-use plastics, and what packaging The Soapery does use is recyclable and refillable. Products like the Shampoo and Conditioner Bars eliminate not only wasteful plastic bottles used for hair care products, but the addition of water to detergents. A single bar is lightweight, long-lasting and plastic-free. And I just can’t get enough of the Honey Oatmeal scent: my shampoo bar sitting on the shelf of my shower caddy is fragranced enough to make my whole bathroom smell like heaven.
The Soapery’s personal care products are all highly fragrant, long-lasting and brightly-colored, stacked in tiers like delicate little desserts. The bath bombs are one of the most-popular sellers, as they’re bigger than those of competitors and come in a variety of glittery, decorated fragrance options, but Tracy’s favorite will always be the soaps because she hand-makes them herself with careful attention to detail. The Soapery’s fragrance library is extensive, with scents ranging from fresh and earthy like Eucalyptus, Lavender and Honeysuckle to tropical blends like Mango Sea Salt and Beach Sage and Sand. Two of my most recent favorites are Calypso and Cucumber Lily.
Though the formulas and production are personal to Tracy, James is the ace of the customer service end of the business. With an ability to remember nearly every customer who comes into the store, James will often recognize their names on orders and write a personalized note on the box. Amid the neon colors, giant flowers and glitter galore, James makes everyone feel comfortable inside The Soapery, not only helping men find the products created to be the most approachable for them, but also manning the shop’s mini tiki bar with a cooler full of cold beer and sports on a TV mounted in the corner, where husbands often spend an entire day socializing while they wait for their spouses to shop Broughton Street.
