Potable Gold: Savannah’s Madeira Tradition – Green-Meldrim House

February 14 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Friday & Saturday Evenings in February

While visiting the 1853 Gothic Revival style gem, learn about the unique place the fortified wine Madeira played in the history of Savannah and the world. For this after-hours, exclusive presentation, see areas of the house not normally accessible and experience the storied wine. Special attention will be given to epicure Savannahians Ward McAllister and William Nye Habersham, as well as to the toasts that might have been raised during General William T. Sherman’s occupation.

It introduces the unique and flavorful fortified wine while it intertwines with the history of Savannah, as a port city and a center of hospitality. Mid and late 19th century Savannahians Ward McAllister and William Neyle Habersham will be linked to Madeira parties. McAllister, who with Mrs. Astor became the arbiters of NY society said, “In Savannah and Charleston, from 1800 up to the Civil War, afternoon wine parties were the custom.”
